What is Astaxanthin?
Astaxanthin is a red-colored pigment produced by microalgaes. It is then consumed by various forms of marine life, for example: salmon, lobster and shrimp.
Often referred to as "the king of the carotenoids" astaxanthin has shown to be 10 to 100 times more powerful than other carotenoids, for example beta-carotene and lycopene. Furthermore, astaxanthin and its ability to fight free radicals has been shown to be more than 6,000 times higher than vitamin C, 550 times higher than vitamin E and 40 times higher than beta-carotene.
Astaxanthin and Joint Health
Astaxanthin has natural anti-inflammatory properties after strenous exercise. Inflammation is an important part of the body’s immune response, chronic inflammation, on the other hand, may contribute to conditions like diabetes, cancer and heart disease. Many studies have found that astaxanthin can reduce markers of inflammation in the body.
Astaxanthin and Omega-3s
Omega-3 fats are fragile and are highly susceptible to damage by oxygen. This can sometimes radially reduce their health benefits and even make them damaging to your body.
A new study has determined that adding the antioxidant astaxanthin to fish oil reduces its susceptibility to oxidation while making its immunomodulatory properties more potent.
- Adding the antioxidant astaxanthin to fish oil reduces its susceptibility to oxidation while making its immunomodulatory properties more potent.
- Without astaxanthin many fish oils on the market are rancid and could do your health more harm than good.
Astaxanthin Improves Cognitive Function
Many antioxidants have a reputation for improving cognition. After all, reducing oxidative stress allows many parts of the body to function more efficiently. Astaxanthin is no exception — a randomized, controlled trial published in 2012, involving 96 subjects, reported a significant improvement in cognition after being supplemented with the antioxidant for 12 weeks.
